South Park TV show fans were anxiously waiting for it to be made into a movie. While the TV show had set up certain limitations on the crudity of the language, the movie seems to be free from all language barriers. Many people do agree that this is not a movie for those who get offended easily. Many critics have formed a simple equation that “if you are a fan of the TV show than you will definitely like the movie”. The story revolves around four kids who sneak into a R rated Canadian movie and come out swearing abuses on almost everyone. Their parents are flabbergasted and request the government to put the actors under Citizen’s arrest and also declare a war on Canada. What follows is a hilarious yet raunchy comedy. With a lot of singing and dancing involved, South Park gives us a message that children too are thinking human beings and need to be heard.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to report on every movie announcement that comes out in a week like some blogs do; a full-time job and personal life have that effect. But I do have an opinion, and sometimes I just have to share…

FAST & FURIOUS by Justin Lin

Part IV of the franchise brings back the original cast from The Fast and the Furious: Vin Diesel (buff and gravel-voiced as usual), Paul Walker (bland as usual), Michelle Rodriguez (sexy but with not enough screen-time), Jordana Brewster (pretty but not that hot), tuned cars and lots of faceless scantily clad girls.
Add newcomers Gal Gadot (pretty hot but in a small role), ruthless drug lords, CGI-enhanced car racing, some pointless faux-lesbian kissing and fondling and a plot with holes so big the truck from the intro - four trailers full of gasoline and all - could slide through sideways, and you have got Fast & Furious. What’s missing from the original is the anarchic energy that made it a kind of B-movie classic.
For hardcore fans of the franchise and/or tuned cars only. Fans don’t worry - this one made enough money and another sequel is already in development.

State of Play: Best Movie of 2009?

The summer movies have yet to arrive, but 2009 has already treated us with a few surprises. State of Play, the political thriller starring Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Jeff Daniels and Ben Affleck, is the best of the year thus far and could find its way into the Top Ten when all is said and done.

State of Play, based on a BBC miniseries, had the potential to be a disaster. After all, boiling down a complicated, six-hour drama-thriller into two hours - for American audiences no less - could have led to some major dumbing down. Thanks to superb direction by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void), smart writing by guys who collectively have written such films as Shattered Glass, Breach, Lions for Lambs, Michael Clayton and The Bourne Supremacy and excellent performances, State of Play is a taut, edgy and believable thriller that avoids such a date. The movie craftily merges political conspiracy with dialogue about the state of the newspaper industry, and even includes a fair amount of humor. All in all, it’s a masterfully crafted and executed drama-thriller.

Monsters vs. Aliens Movie Review: 3D Over Quality?

DreamWorks Animation’s latest, Monsters vs. Aliens, is an attempt to combine the world of Monsters, Inc. and The Incredibles to make an action-packed comedy where… monsters battle aliens. The movie is also in 3D, and thank God for that; its visuals are its saving grace.

In Monsters vs. Aliens, a planet explodes, sending a meteorite to Earth. No, Kal El is not on board, but the meteorite does cause one soon-to-be-married bride named Susan Murphy to grow into a gigantic woman and get shipped away by the government to a special holding area for monsters. Her roommates include a scientist-turned-cockroach, a half-man, half-reptile creature, a gigantic, furry insect and a gelatinous blob that sounds a lot like Seth Rogen. When aliens invade to reclaim the power that Susan has absorbed, however, these monsters become humanity’s last chance for survival.

X-Men Volume 1 and Volume 2 Come to DVD

I was born in the 80’s and grew up watching cartoons into the early nineties. One of my staples on Saturday morning was the X-Men animated series.

Despite being a DC Comics fan and not a Marvel one as much, there was something about the show that had me waiting with bated breath for every episode. Compared to some of the other cartoons going on those days - such as the Batman animated series - the artistry was more in tune with the comic book art, the stories grittier and more realistic. In reality, the Batman series - which I also watched - was all-around better, but the X-Men series was the one to watch.

The Twilight Series is No Harry Potter

I watched Twilight when it came to theaters. It was surprisingly pretty good, even though it was focused more on the hormones of a teenage girl than on anything more macro such as good versus evil or protagonist versus antagonist (though one would argue that the complexities of a woman cannot be topped).

Following that, I went on to read all four of the Twilight books by Stephenie Meyer. I had heard they were good, so I was willing to give them a chance. The first book was good and quite entertaining, as Bella attempted to discover what the mystery was behind Edward. The second book, however, was just OK.

New Moon, which is hastily being made into a movie this year, is not going to make much of a movie at all. The first half of the book is pretty good, as Bella starts up a quasi-relationship with Jacob, her soon-to-be-werewolf best friend. In reality, the book is just a retread of the first one, only with a werewolf in place of a vampire. Bella sure knows how to pick them, doesn’t she? It’s entertaining, but when it devolves into a race to save Edward from the Volturi, it takes a turn for the worse. Meyer ends the book with absolutely no action, and in fact there is only one suspenseful moment in the entire novel. How will this become a good movie? It’s hard to imagine.

Thankfully, Eclipse is a much-better book. Victoria, who has been lurking in the shadows since the first novel, amasses a vampire army to take down the Cullens and kill Bella. The result? A vampire vs. vampire vs. werewolf battle, which, if done right, should be amazing on the silver screen. Eclipse is exciting, smart and entertaining, and will make a perfect finish to the trilogy.
